FTC orders Match and OkCupid to stop misrepresenting how they share user data

FTC Act Section 5 Federal

The FTC filed a stipulated final order against Match Group and OkCupid after finding that OkCupid shared photos and location data belonging to roughly 3 million users with an unauthorized third party, despite a privacy policy promising such sharing would only happen with service providers, business partners, or family affiliates. The order bars both companies from misrepresenting their privacy practices going forward.

Why it matters There's no fine, but a privacy policy promise about who sees your data is now something the FTC will hold the company to directly.
