CPPA fines Datamasters $45K for selling lists of people with Alzheimer’s and addiction

CCPA/CPRA California

The California Privacy Protection Agency fined Rickenbacher Data LLC, doing business as Datamasters, $45,000 for operating as an unregistered data broker while reselling lists of Californians with Alzheimer's disease, drug addiction, and bladder incontinence, along with demographic and political-affiliation data. The company must cease selling all Californians' personal information. In the same announcement, the CPPA separately fined S&P Global, Inc. $62,600 for a registration lapse caused by an administrative error.

Why it matters Selling lists sorted by disease and addiction status, without ever registering as a data broker, is exactly what California's Delete Act exists to catch.
