Employee Spotlight: Meet Valerie Sui, Senior Software Engineer

Valerie Pettersen, February 4, 2025

Valerie Sui has been a Senior Software Engineer at DataGrail for over six years. As a member of the Trust Team, she plays a key role in developing products, including Request Manager and DataGrail Consent. These products empower brands to automate and streamline data privacy management, ensuring individuals maintain the control over their personal information they deserve.

This month, we talked to Valerie about the momentum behind DataGrail consent, the pride she takes in her long-term impact at DataGrail, and the collaborative culture of the engineering team.

What is your team working on that has you feeling most energized?

Our cookie consent management product, DataGrail Consent, has a lot of momentum in the market. Existing and new customers are equally excited about it as it’s filing a gap in their privacy platform. We’re putting a lot of effort into making it a really great product and it’s been awesome to see the positive feedback and how much our customers love it. Onboarding has been moving fast so we’ve been able to get customers on board and see the value quickly.

What are some interesting technical challenges you and your team have been working on?

We’ve been focusing on self management and customization within the platform. For example, we want to give customers the ability to have more control of how they manage their cookie consent banner.

Customization is a big technical challenge when it comes to balancing customer experience and the technical challenges with data modeling and scaling. These challenges always lead to productive conversations and hopefully features that customers are excited about.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Even after six years here, I still feel like I’m learning every day and making a meaningful impact. I like to share company and product history and provide context to newer members of the team. A lot of things I’ve worked on are now being used by our customers to help us on our mission. Our product and team is continuously iterating and I feel positive and excited about the direction we’re moving in.

The Engineering team does Lunch and Learns, what have been some interesting ones recently?

We’ve been doing informal demos lately on some really great tools. We can keep up with what’s being worked on and built across teams and products. We get to see the progress we’re making as an organization in a very laid back welcoming environment

We also have a lot of public Slack channels where we are encouraged to share interesting things that we’ve learned. Lately, there has been a lot of interest geared towards AI tools.

How would you describe the culture on the engineering team?

We are a small and incredibly talented team that really cares about each other and what we are building. It’s very encouraging – we welcome different perspectives on how we get where we are going and everyone is willing to share knowledge and help each other out wherever needed. It feels like we are all working towards the same goal and we evaluate priorities constantly.
